My name is Daniel. I was an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea, and am now a writer who has
published three books including South Korea: Our Story by Daniel Nardini.
There is no question that a lot of Americans here have been talking about the
possibility of a North Korean nuclear attack against the United States mainland. They range from deep
concern and outright fear to "we don't care." I guess it depends on where Americans are in the United
States that their concern level varies. In say, for example, Chicago (where I was from originally), people
fear that their city will be a target and that a North Korean missile with a nuclear warhead will get through
and completely destroy the place. Many people in Chicago responded that unlike the wars in
Afghanistan and Iraq, the one with North Korea will be truly bloody and could involve nuclear weapons.
In the more rural areas of this country, people seem to have more confidence that current U.S. President
Donald Trump will respond in a way that will truly end North Korea and the Kim Jong-un regime. Unlike
many people in America's major cities, many people in small towns and cities feel that America will
prevail and that North Korea will be history. But the confidence is not just with President Trump but also
with America's military and the military of its allies (Japan and South Korea) that will respond with force
if North Korea tries to attack the United States. So while there are Americans who find it harder to sleep
at night because of threats from North Korea, there are many Americans who have no problem sleeping at
night in the belief that the United States will prevail. In my personal viewpoint, I do not see North Korea
launching an attack against American territory with non-nuclear missiles, let alone with nuclear missiles.
The threat to hitting American territory is not new. North Korea made similar threats against Guam in
2013, and that is why the THAAD anti-missile system was installed on that island. In 2016, North Korea
made the threat of hitting Guam with a missile launched from a submarine, so more THAAD launchers
were sent. While there is no guarantee that North Korea will not carry out some kind of threat, in my
view there may be a threat, but carrying it out is highly unlikely (note: there are some Americans who
do not believe that North Korea will carry out such threats either).
