My name is Daniel. I was an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea, and now I am a writer who has
published three books including South Korea: Our Story by Daniel Nardini.
Before I taught English in South Korea, I was an English teacher in Taiwan. I learned
that Taiwan also has a pro-China lobby. Well, yes and no. Taiwan's pro-China lobby has more influence on
Taiwan's economics than on its politics. Yes, because in part of Taiwan's pro-China lobby the economies
of Taiwan and China are closely interlinked. However, neither the Nationalist Party nor the ruling Democratic
Progressive Party are much influenced by the pro-China lobby. A good part of the reason why is because
Taiwanese for the most part are descended from Chinese immigrants who had gone to Taiwan. The
Taiwanese know only too well from their experience what the Chinese government (specifically the Chinese
Communist Party) has in mind; total domination of Taiwan. This is why the government in Taiwan, regardless
of which party is in power, has limitations on investment from China, has limitations on immigration from
China, and has a very active policy of Taiwanese investments in Southeast Asia to prevent domination of
Chinese investments in Taiwan. But most important, the Taiwanese are doing what they can to prevent China
from taking over the island politically by any of the parties that are either in opposition or ruling the country.
This is in stark contrast with South Korea where the pro-China lobby has made great inroads into the
politics of the country.
