My name is Daniel. I was an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea, and am now a writer who has published three books including South Korea: Our Story by Daniel Nardini.
As I said before, former South Korean President Park Geun-hye wanted to change the currently used private-published school textbooks because they were inaccurate and have a leftist point of view because of the now discredited Sunshine Policy. Because of this, there was a great uproar against this move, with the political leftists crying "dictatorship." There are three problems though, First, the current textbooks ARE inaccurate and do in part reflect a leftist viewpoint. Second, the government effort to replace these textbooks is not likely because the new textbooks have not even been written and put in final form yet. Finally, it is not likely that any government-approved textbooks will be put in place unless a more conservative politician is elected president of South Korea. This is something the political left in South Korea does not want to see, and is doing all it can to make sure that a political left of center politician is elected in South Korea. For the political left in South Korea, the current textbooks help them distort the history of the Republic of Korea and help them plant a leftist view of Korean history. This will make it easier to influence and control the minds of young people who are by and large the main force of the political left's shock troops in all of the candlelight vigils in Seoul and elsewhere. The real dictatorship is when history is held hostage for political purposes.
