My name is Daniel. I was an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea, and am now a writer who has
published three books including South Korea: Our Story by Daniel Nardini.
It is estimated that South Korea will lose U.S. $10 billion for the
PyeongChang winter Olympic games. It is not unusual for a host country to actually lose money
for an Olympic event. After all, such an event costs money to make money. How much will be
made from the games once they are concluded we shall see. However, there is one clear winner
from the whole affair----North Korea and the Kim family. First, we must keep in mind that the
South Korean government provided for all of the expenses, accommodations and all other
logistics for the North Koreans as part of a number of joint teams. Second, South Korea hosted
Kim Yo-jong and all of the North Korean entourage that came with her. Why should the North
Koreans get free what other countries, including the United States, had to pay for their athletes
and government personnel to attend the games? But the worst part in the whole event was
that it all made North Korea look good. Sadly, a lot of the South Korean news media fell all over
itself to make the North Koreans look good, and of course there was NO criticism from anyone
in the South Korean government about how the North Korean government used the games as
a propaganda showpiece. What this will do for the Kim family is first off establish a precedent
for them getting more money out of South Korea. Second, it will help them make North Korea
look like the "good guy" looking for peace while the evil "American imperialists" seem to have
no interest in peace at all. And finally, the Kim family will have the excuses they want to keep
testing nuclear weapons and missiles so they can "defend themselves." It could not have
been a better propaganda coup for them.
