1.Love and longing for arises

between each other who has passion

love and longing for is accompanied by bitterness.

but he has awakened that worries and heartache, bringing out from passion

2. As like here and there looking for

baits loose in bush

the man with wisdom,finding independence and freedom

3.Indeed,desire entertains us enoughly

gorgeous and sweet in sight

but on the other hand,various shape of entertaining

makes it scattered apart all over our minds,

4.The object of our desire is

contending the other and transcending philosopheric views

then, to reach way to enligtenment

Man who has obtained 'Tao(道),

5.I have got wisdom now

then,transcending  philosopheric views who argued against the other

then,reaching way to enlightenment

Man who has obtained 'Tao',

6.I have got wisdom already

then,no needs to be instructed from other one

7.No covet,nor deceive, neither craving for

also, no needs to obstruct other's virtue(悳)

discarding confusion and delusion

free from all love in the world

8.Do never get concerned  to

without any entertainment and amusement

,no delight in the world

while on telling truth without any puppetry

9.Where as fire broke out once

like fish in the water bites net

like never fire on twice again there

cutting throughly all knotts of carnal affliction

10.Stripping out five elements of human agonies

and,throughly out all carnal affliction,nor dependent upon

neither adhered carnal lust

11.Devoted  trying to reach the highest aims

and,efforting all the time

defeating ease of mind

nor, performing lazy training

devoting to discipline eagerly

having both wisdom and power on body

12.Do not be lazy to get rid of carnal desire

neither be the dumb

stabylizing  mind with endeavering studies

knowing certainly principle and refraining from all the time

13.King of beasts, lion with the rugged teeth

is likely to subdue other beasts

arranging the dwelling nest ,and...

14.Abandoned greed,hate and roving stray

even if, losted his life for breaking his yoke

15.Such lion never surprised at sound

such wind never captured at net

다음은 수타 니파타(sutta nipata-經集 경집)에 나오는 초기 불교 경전으로 남방불교(hynayana)에 나오는 '수행자 (修行者)의 생애(生涯)'로 4성체와 8정도의 실천을 요구하며 윤리적 규범(倫理的  規範)을 나타낸 것으로 부처의 사후 제자(弟者)가 구성한 것입니다. 그 내용을 간추리면 다음과 같습니다.

깨달음(enlightenment)의 길은 누군가가 이끌어 주지 않습니다. 결국 코뿔소(rhinoceros)처럼  그렇게 혼자 가라는 말입니다. 코뿔소 스스로  자신의 몸에서 자라나는 무소의 뿔-뿌리가 튼튼하며 스스로의 고통(苦痛)을 뚫고 자라나며(人間의 自省), 나태(懶怠)함보다는 용기(勇氣)를 위주로 하였고, 그 짐승은 무리짓지 않고 육중(肉重)한 체중(體重)과 두꺼운 피부(皮膚)로 홀로 생활합니다. 인도 코뿔소는 뿔이 하나로 84,000 개의 인간번뇌(人間煩惱)를 다스립니다.

오온(五蘊)은 인간의 육체(色)와 정신(名)을 물질적 형태인 색(色),수(受),상(想),행(行),식(識)의 5 가지 경험 축적(經驗 蓄積)되어야 인간의 삶이 유지된다고 합니다.다음의 글을 영문으로 번역해 보시기 바랍니다.

'수행자의 생애(修行者의 生涯)'

1.서로 사귄 사람에게는

사랑과 그리움이 생긴다

사랑과 그리움에는 괴로움이 따르는 법

연정(戀情)에서 근심 걱정이 생기는 줄 알고

코뿔소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라.

2.숲속에서 묶여 있지 않는

먹이를 찾아 여기저기 다니 듯

지혜로운 이는  독립(獨立)과 자유(自由)를 찾아

코뿔소 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라.

3.욕망(慾望)은 실로 그 빛깔이 곱고 감미(甘味)로우며

우리를 즐겁게 한다

그러나 한편 여러가지 모양으로

우리의 마음을 산산(散散)히 흐뜨려 놓는다

4.욕망(慾望)의 대상(對像)에는

서로 다투는 철학적 견해(哲學的 見解)를 초월(超越)하고

깨달음에 이르는 길에 도달(到達)하여

도(道)를 얻은 사람은,

5.나는 지혜(智慧)를 얻었으니

서로 다투는 철학적 견해를 초월하고
깨달음에 이르는 길에 도달하여

도(道)를 얻은 사람은, 

6.나는 지혜를 얻었으니

이제는 남의 지도(指導)를 받을 필요(必要)가 없다고

코뿔소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라.

7.탐내지 말고, 속이지 말며, 갈망(渴望)하지 말고,

남의 덕(悳)을 가리지 말고,

혼탁(混濁)과 미혹(迷惑)을 버리고

세상(世上)의 온갖 애착(愛着)에서 벗어나

코뿔소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라.

8.세상의 유희(遊戱)나 오락(娛樂) 혹은

쾌락(快樂)에 젖지 말고

관심(關心)도 가지지 가지지 말라

꾸밈없이 진실(眞實)을 말하면서

코뿔소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라.

9.물속의 고기가 그물을 찢듯이

한 번 불 타 버린 곳에는

다시 불이 붙지 않듯이

모든 번뇌(惱煩)의 매듭을 끊어 버리고

코뿔소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라.

10.마음 속의 다섯가지 덮개 오온

(五蘊)을 벗기고

온갖 번뇌를 제거(除去)하여 의지(依支)하지 않으며

애욕(愛慾)의 허물을 끊어 버리고

코뿔소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라.

11.최고(最高)의 목적(目的)에 도달하기 위해

노력 정진(努力 精進)하고

마음의 안일(安逸)을 물리치고

수행(修行)에 게으르지 말며

용맹 정진(勇猛 精進)하여 

몸의 힘과  지혜(智慧)의 힘을 갖추고

코뿔소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라.

12.애착(愛着)을 없애는 일에 게으르지 말며

벙어리도 되지 말라

학문(學門)을 닦고 마음을 안정(安定)시켜

이치(理治)를 분명히 알며 자제(自制)하고

코뿔소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라.

13.이빨이 억세고 뭇짐승의 왕인 사자(獅子)가

다른 짐승을 제압(制壓)하듯이

궁벽(窮僻)한 곳에 거처(居處)를 마련하고

코뿔소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라.

14.탐욕(貪慾)과 혐오(嫌惡)와 헤맴을 버리고

속박(束縛)을 끊어 목숨을 잃어도

두려워 하지 말고

코뿔소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라.

15.소리에 놀라지 않는 사자(獅子)와 같이

그물에 걸리지 않는 바람과 같이

흙탕물에 더럽히지 않는 연꽃(蓮-)과 같이

코뿔소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라.

홀로 행하고 게으르지 말며

비난(非難)과 칭찬(稱讚)에도 흔들리지 말라
