My name is Daniel. I was an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea, and am now a writer who has
published three books including South Korea: Our Story by Daniel Nardini.
Current South Korean President is trying to reduce the air pollution that has become a
problem in Seoul and throughout parts of the country. Among the solutions is seeding clouds to produce
rain to clear away the pollution. This is a good idea, but sadly is is not enough to deal with the air
pollution that is proving to be a health hazard to average Koreans. The big problem is in fact China.
The sheer number of Chinese factories, plus the desert sand, is causing immense pollution problems in
South Korea (probably also North Korea). One can ask why well-known international environmental
organizations such as the World Wildlife Federation, Green Peace, and Conservation International do not
say anything to the Chinese government about the pollution it is causing?! It is for the same reason why
they will not say anything about China creating artificial islands in the South China Sea and ruining the
natural reefs in the region---these organizations have offices and investments in China and the Chinese
government can take all of these things away. So they remain silent; but this is also at the expense of the
Korean people. I remember my wife telling me that back in the 1970's, there was a lot of air pollution in Seoul
because of all the factories in South Korea at the time. Eventually, the government forced the factory owners
to cut down on the pollution. I believe that the South Korean government will have pressure the international
environmental groups mentioned to try and get them to work with the Chinese government to cut down the
air pollution that is affecting the Korean as well as Chinese peoples.
