My name is Daniel. I was an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea, and am now a writer who has
published three books including South Korea: Our Story by Daniel Nardini.
Unlike the United States, Canada does allow its citizens to still be able
to go and see the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The Canadian government simply
makes it clear that all Canadians citizens are on their own and that they should avoid all travel to
the DPRK. There is diplomatic relations between Canada and the DPRK, but no embassies in
each others' countries. Although I have no interest in it for myself, the curious thing is that there
IS a bookstore that stocks all kinds of books and magazines directly from the Democratic People's
Republic of Korea (North Korea) in English and in Korean. Although the books are mostly in English,
they are all published in North Korea and as such this bookstore has volumes on the works of
Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il, and now even Kim Jong-un. This bookstore is located in Winnipeg, Canada,
and has existed since 2002. It also has books on travel to North Korea, history, society, and even
Korean foods and cooking Korean cuisine. Just as equally strange is that the bookstore also has
digital video discs of North Korean movies (all regions) with many of them having English subtitles.
The bookstore also has North Korean magazines and newspapers, and one can subscriptions for them.
This bookstore is simply called North Korea Books. Personally, this is too much for me. If I want
Asian Communist propaganda books, dvds and magazines, I can go to China Books which is a
bookstore in the United States with books and magazines printed in China. China Books is located in
San Francisco, and has been there for 57 years. Besides, their books and magazines are cheaper
to get (I guess North Korea needs the hard cash!).
